cheerleaders for christ
there is...
a reason that i am agnostic.
first some history.
i went to a church that was not full of cheerleaders for christ.
the pastor was able to relate the stories of the bible to the present day,
without inserting 'because of jesus' love' into every other sentence.
this was a 'religious' experience that i can handle.
i recently went to a new friends baptism.
it was at a church, that one of my oldest friends ever goes to
witnessing the baptism of my new friend.
what really struck me was the whole cheerleader for christ aspect.
this is what i don't like about organized religion. the need to mention jesus' love
for you in every sentence. since i haven't been to another church other than the one
i grew up with, and was peripherally involved with in many ways, i was absolutely
amazed. while not a cult, it seemed like a cult. a majority of people there, just basking
in the words about jesus love for them. they needed to hear that just to get through the day
i am not going to say what i think about that.
it's one thing to believe in something,
it's another thing to have to expound about it, or feel you have to do that
in every or every other sentence
i will say i believe in something.
it is not tied to any specific version of some book
written by a whole bunch of guys who claim that that is what happened.
it is not tied to a building
in which some divine being is said to live (man, that guy has homes everywhere)
it is tied to my personal sense of what is right, what is good for the world and what is good for those around me.
that is religion. that is my belief in a higher power, maybe not a higher being.
i am a scientist. i do believe in evolution.
the creation story is a great story. it's wonderful.
but if you believe that in the face of physical evidence
maybe you should just lie down.
i hear there is a comet passing by ;)
